Lamine Yamal Golden Boy award win was announced on the 27th of November 2024. On the day that he was announced to be the winner he was 17 years and 137 days old, which meant that he was the youngest ever to win, and also the first one below the age of 18.
Yamal is a Spanish citizen and was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, a suburb to Barcelona, but his parents are both originating from Africa. His mother comes from Equatorial Guinea and his father is Moroccan.
Been with Barcelona all his career
He joined FC Barcelona at an early age and has gotten his football schooling in Barcelona’s youth academy La Masia. He made his debut for Barcelona in La Liga on the 29th of April 2023, when he was still 15 years old (and 9 months and 16 days), coming on the pitch as a substitute. He scored his first goal in the season after, on the 28th of October in a La Liga match against Granada.
In the Spanish national team
Yamal made his debut in the Spanish shirt on U15 level in 2021, and the following years he represented Spain on all youth level teams up to U19. However, he has never played for the U21 team, and reason is that he instead was called up to the senior Spanish team on the 1st of December 2023, being 16 years and 50 days old at the time.
He made his debut on the pitch for Spain against Georgia on the 8th of December 2023 and he also scored a goal in that game, as Spain beat Georgia with 7-1. This goal meant that he became the youngest ever to score in the Spanish national team, and also the youngest player to ever score in a Euro qualifying game.
After his debut he has been a regular in the Spanish team, despite his young age. The highlight of his short but intense international career is of course winning the gold in Euro 2024 with Spain. He was not only part of that winning team, but also one of the most prominent players in the squad, and his performance in that tournament was one of the main reasons why he won the Golden Boy award 2024.
